Welcome to the first edition of the East KY Racing Blog I will try to update this blog as information comes up my way or when possible.
The 2012 season is looking strong so far, reports are that Willard will reopen for the 2012 season, along with 191 Speedway, Lucky 7, returning following strong 2011 seasons, both 191 and Lucky 7 look to build on impressive showings with series races, and special programs in 2011 that shattered attendance records at both tracks, the 2011 Coal Miners Classic at Lucky 7 was probably the largerst event ever held at Lucky 7 to date, and the Wince Mayabb Memorial was a big success at 191 Speedway.
Now figure in Willard Speedways return to action in 2012 it's still unclear what Willard Speedways plans will be for 2012, but I believe Randy Boggs the Lease holder at Willard will bring Willard back in a strong way with rules close if not the same as some of the tracks in the region.
My first question about Willard Speedway reopening is what night? Will Willard Speedway try to run on a Saturday night? if so does this mean they plan on working with Southern Ohio Speedway, they both plan on running a Mini Mod Division in 2012, I don't know if it would make much sense to both run this division since there are not really alot of these type cars in this region running on the same night, if Willard does run on Saturday night will many of the drivers support Willard Speedway over the likes of 191 Speedway and Portsmouth Raceway both great tracks who have proven to be open on a consistant basis. can Willard compete on Saturday with these two tracks?
If Willard runs Friday night Willard would then be competing directly with Southern Ohio Speedway with many special events scheduled and all the past history of SOS even though it did set idle for several seasons is one its way back with special Late Model Shows, as well as Sprint, and other special events for the drivers and the fans scheduled all season long.
My personal opinion I think Willard will run Saturdays because not all drivers will want to travel to PRP, or 191 Willard will be closer for some drivers which will save some drivers on the fuel bill and some of the less experience drivers my choose Willard to get experience before trying their luck on the more high speed tracks like PRP, 191, or Lucky 7. I think Willard will be a great addition to the 2012 sseason in this region.
A month ago I had this idea of trying to get a special race scheduled in this area, my idea involved three tracks on the same weekend, and having a weekend points system for that weekend paying to top 3 points finishers a bonus for thier effort, after making some calls to a couple of the tracks, and working getting it worked out with a up and coming series to sanction the event, the announcement was set for the middle of January however I recieved a bad late Christmas present when it was announced that the series had folded and was not going to be in operation for the 2012 season, so I am hoping that the tracks will keep the dates as planned while it may not be a series race now it can still be a great racing weekend, the dates for these events will be Memorial weekend and Labor Day Weekend. The two tracks are 191 and Lucky 7 Speedway Lucky 7 Saturday night, and 191 Speedway Sunday night, both were/are scheduled for $3K to win and the series had a Friday night venue set in Ohio (Molar I think), but my concern is Lucky 7 and 191 Speedway for these weekends, I would like to find a Friday night track to go with these two events (if the tracks decide to keep these events) maybe Willard? I'll have to work on this and see if I can salvage these weekends events, but don't expect the points bonus I will be lucky to keep these two weekends from falling apart from now til then. No promises just something I am working on.
